Antivirus software is often not enough.

Don't assume you're safe just because you have a popular antivirus program.  Most people use Norton Antivirus and the bad guys know this.  They can intentionally engineer malware to avoid detection by Norton.  If you are online, you are a target for malware (viruses, worms, spyware, ransomware, etc.), hackers, and identity theft.

Results can include:

    Complete System Failure

    Permanent Damage to your Files

Invasion of Privacy and Security Issues

Expose Sensitive Information (i.e. credit card and bank account numbers) to Criminals.

Let's get technical

The terms, "Malware" / "Virus" / "Worm" / "Trojan" / "Spyware" / "Adware" / "Rootkit" / "Ransomware" get confused and misused a lot.  Actually, all of them can be considered malware (short for malicious software).  Malware is any piece of code designed to infect your computer (or mobile device) and make it do things that you don't want it to do, such as mass-mail others, steal your banking passwords, or crash your computer.  Although a virus is only one type of malware, most people use the term "virus" to mean the same thing. (True computer viruses have become pretty rare.)

♦  A virus is a type of malware that copies itself by infecting other files, just as viruses in the real world infect your cells and use them to reproduce. A virus can do many different things — watch in the background and steal your passwords, display advertisements, or just crash your computer.  What makes it a virus is how it spreads. When you run a virus, it will infect programs on your computer.  If you run the program on another computer, the virus will infect programs on that computer, and so on.

♦  A worm is similar to a virus, but it spreads a different way. Rather than relying on human activity to move infected files around to different computers, a worm spreads over networks on its own. The main difference between a worm and a virus is simply how it copies and spreads itself.

♦  A Trojan, or Trojan Horse, is a type of malware that disguises itself as a legitimate file. When you download and run the program, the Trojan horse will run in the background, allowing third-parties to access your computer. They can do a variety of malicious things:  monitor activity on your computer, or open the floodgates and download many other types of malware onto your computer.  What separates a Trojan from other malware is that it pretends to be a useful program to trick you into downloading and running it.

♦  Spyware is a type of malware that spies on you without your knowledge. It collects a variety of information including logging your keystrokes to steal passwords to financial sites.  There are some forms of “legitimate” spyware which are often bundled with free software and simply monitor your web browsing habits and sell this data to advertisers. It is less malicious but still an invasion of privacy.

♦  Adware is any type of software that displays advertising on your computer.  While many legitimate programs display advertisements within the program and aren't considered malicious, adware displays ads when it shouldn’t (i.e. random pop-up ads).

♦  Scareware is designed to look like a legitimate program such as an antivirus or a Windows operating system function. It is often difficult to tell if they are real or fake.  The program may inform you that you are infected with a virus/malware and the only way to remove the infection is to pay for the software. In reality, the software itself is the malware.  Don't pay for it; get rid of it.

♦  A rootkit is a type of malware designed to burrow deep into your computer so that security programs can’t detect it. A rootkit might hide itself completely, preventing itself from showing up in the Windows task manager. These can be particularly difficult to detect and remove.

♦  Ransomware is a fairly new type of malware. It holds your computer or files hostage and demands a ransom payment. Ransomware doesn’t want to just cause you trouble. It wants to take your files hostage and extort money from you. Some ransomware may be a simple pop-up box asking for money before you can continue using your computer.  More harmful malware like CryptoLocker literally encrypts your files and demands a payment before you can access them. Such types of malware are dangerous, especially if you don’t have backups.  Even if you pay the ransom and unlock your files, your files are often corrupted and unusable.  Bottom line: Don't pay the ransom!

Scared yet?  All types of malware can be removed, however sometimes the damage they do to your files is irreversible.

"An once of prevention is worth a pound of cure."  Always use antivirus software and keep your software up to date.  Avoid downloading suspicious files.  Always keep backups of important files.
